  1. Montréal

Multicultural, multilingual, and in 2016 named Intelligent Community of the Year, Montréal can now also lay claim to being the world’s best city for international students. Climbing six places to top this year’s QS Best Student Cities, Canada’s cultural capital performs well across all six categories assessed – including the new Student View component.

Montréal is home to several of Canadas highest-ranking institutions, including McGill University (currently ranked 30th in the world and 1st in Canada) and the Université de Montréal (126thin the world, 5th in Canada). The city is also a regular contender in lists of the world’s best places to live – and it seems students agree! In the Student View category added to the index this year, Montréal comes out fifth overall, with a particularly strong rating for arts and culture, as well as for its friendliness, diversity and affordability.

None of this is likely to come as a surprise. As a French-speaking city in a largely English-speaking nation that has experienced mass immigration from across the world, Montréal is known for its multicultural makeup and inclusive ethos. It’s also renowned for its laidback yet lively lifestyle, attractive boulevards, thriving creative industries, café culture, and eclectic range of arts venues, live performances and nightlife.

  Affordability rank: 39th

Average annual living expenses: CA$14,700 (~US$11,300) according to the Université de Montréal.

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): US$12,200 per year

  Other things to mention:

If you come from a warmer climate, you’ll also need to take into account the money you’ll spend on warm winter clothing - Montréal gets pretty cold!

Don’t forget to ctor in extra costs. Health insurance, for example, will cost around CA$600 (~US$450) a year.

  1、

  2. Paris

After four consecutive years at the top of the QS Best Student Cities index, the 2017 edition sees theFrench capital ll one place (losing out to fellow Francophone city Montréal).

Paris’ consistently strong placing in the index is largely due to its high concentration of internationally ranking universities. Home to 18 universities featured in the QS World University Rankings® (either overall or in specific indicators), it lays claim to comfortably more world-leading institutions than almost any city on the planet – with the exceptions of Seoul (also 18) and London (17).

While Paris does have a (justified) reputation for its high cost of living, this is to a large extent balanced out by low tuition fees – though of course enjoying all the delights of life in this iconic European capital will certainly stretch your student budget, especially if you’re into haute couture and haute cuisine…

Elite Parisian universities and specialized schools such as ENS Paris, Ecole Polytechnique ParisTech,Sciences Po Paris, Université Paris-Sorbonne (ParisIV) and HEC Paris have produced some of the most important philosophers, theorists, scientists, politicians, business leaders and mathematicians of the last 100 years, along with seminal movements in literature, film and art. Today, Parisian graduates are targeted by a vast range of employers across the continent, as is reflected in the city’s strong score in the Employer Activity category of the index.

Though its reign at the top of the Best Student Cities table has now been interrupted, the City of Love is certain to hold its place in the hearts of prospective students across the world. Will it be back in the number one spot next year? Have your say.

  Affordability rank: 38th

Average annual living expenses: €12,000 (~US$12,800), according to Université Paris-Sorbonne.

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): US$2,900 per year

  Other things to mention:

Tuition fees are the same in Paris for domestic and international students.

The highly selective grandes écoles and grands établissements (great schools and establishments) set their own fees, which are considerably higher than other institutions.

  3. London

In the wake of 2016’s Brexit vote, there’s been concern that the UK could lose some of its appeal as an international study destination. But the 2017 edition of the QS Best Student Cities sees the nation’s capital climb two places to rank third overall – helped in part by the ll in the value of the pound, which has made it a more affordable proposition for international students.

Of course, London is still not exactly a cheap option. For international students, tuition fees at the city’s top universities approach those charged in the US, while home and EU undergraduate students are feeling the impact of fee increases implemented since 2012. In addition, rent and living costs are significantly higher in London compared to the rest of the UK.

Yet thanks to the concentration of world-class universities, professional and social opportunities, and a mind-boggling cultural confluence that mixes the corporate and the alternative, the historical and the cutting-edge, studying in London may well be worth every penny.

Few cities in the world can rival Londons credentials as a nerve-center of global academia. Among its fleet of internationally ranked universities, the current leaders are UCL (University College London) and Imperial College London, which rank 7th and 9th respectively in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017.

King’s College London is also just one place outside the global top 20, and a whole host of other prestigious institutions are scattered throughout the metropolis – along with world-leading cilities such as the British Library, which constitutes one of the most extensive and significant collections of books and manuscripts in the world.

And of course, the UKs capital is not just an academic hub – it’s an epicenter of international finance and business, culture and creativity, med for its museums, arts scene, nightlife and diversity. Anything you want to try, see, eat, learn or experience: it’s here.

  Affordability rank: 105th

Average annual living expenses: at least £15,180 (~US$18,960)

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): US$21,400 per year

  Other things to mention:

Tuition fees vary depending on whether you’re classed as a home, EU or international student. (Find out more here).

There’s so r been no increase in tuition fees for EU students following the Brexit vote, and EU students also remain entitled to the same loans and grants. However, this situation may change in the future.

  4. Seoul

Long since labelled as an up-and-coming destination, Seoul is certainly good on this prediction as it continues to climb the QS Best Student Cities index – claiming 4th place in the 2017 edition.

South Korea’s capital scores well in a number of indicators used to compile the index, most notably in the Employer Activity category, where it ranks second – reflecting the strong reputation of universities in Seoul amongst both domestic and international employers.

The city also claims the third-highest score in the University Rankings category (beaten only by Londonand Paris). This score is explained by the impressive ct that no fewer than 18 universities in Seoul are featured in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, of which the highest-ranked is Seoul National University, at 35th in the world.

But it’s not just about superb rankings and reputation. Seoul is a 24/7 city in which life is never dull. Whether it’s the sounds of night-market sellers, the atmosphere of the all-night tea houses or the cries of gamers at a ‘PC bang’ (gaming center), Seoul is as alive at 3am as it is at 5pm. The magic of this city is that boredom is impossible, with culture, history and creativity everywhere you turn.

If you need some more restful down-time from your studies, Seoul also offers many opportunities to find your inner Zen, whether at one of many Buddhist temples or in a traditional sauna or spa. Further tranquility can be found less than one hour outside of the city walls, where you can explore South Korea’s mountainous landscape and charming, historic villages.

Students and graduates of the city certainly rate their experience highly – Seoul comes 8th in the new Student View category of the index.

  Affordability rank: 74th

Average annual living expenses: US$13,500, according to Seoul National University (SNU)

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): US$6,300

  Other things to mention:

There are two semesters in each academic year in South Korea, and undergraduate programs are typically four years long.

An increasing number of scholarships are available .

  5. Melbourne

Having previously occupied second place in the QS Best Student Cities index, the 2017 edition sees Melbourne ll to fifth, largely due to lost ground in the Affordability category. Yet, it remains without doubt a highly attractive destination for international students, and – home to one of the world’s most diverse student communities – retains the index’s strongest score for Student Mix.

Seven universities in Melbourne are featured in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, the highest-ranked of which is the University of Melbourne at 42nd in the world – second only to Australian National University on the Australian leaderboard.

Known as Australia’s cultural capital, Melbourne regularly tops lists of the world’s most livable cities, and is full of all the attractions that make the Australian lifestyle so appealing – including beautiful beaches, nightlife and a ir proportion of sunny days. The city’s cultural calendar is packed year-round – spanning arts, comedy, music, film, shion, and a host of multicultural celebrations.

As well as boasting the highest score in the Student Mix category, Melbourne also scores particularly well for Desirability – reflecting both the overall quality of life in the city, and its status as an in-demand student destination. Like other Australian cities, it stumbles only when it comes to affordability, with both fees and living costs on the high side in global terms. But, for high standards of living and incredible natural surroundings, Melbourne remains a tough city to beat.

  Affordability rank: 104th

Average annual living expenses: AU$19,830 (~US$15,250).

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): US$23,300

  Other things to mention:

Your student visa allows you to work up to 40 hours a fortnight during term time, but you shouldn’t rely on part-time work to fund living costs.

There are a range of scholarships available, including the merit-based Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships, which are funded by the Australian government.

  5、

  6. Berlin

Germany has been growing steadily in popularity as a study abroad destination, and its capital city is also on the climb – rising three positions to rank 6th in the QS Best Student Cities 2017.

Having flourished into one of the world’s coolest urban hubs – a major center of design, shion, music and art to rival even New York or London – Berlin offers both unbeatable culture and a hot financial market, it as perfect for history buffs and art aficionados as it is for budding financiers.

And to sweeten the deal even further, all undergraduate degrees (and some postgraduate programs) are free at public universities in Germany, even for international students.

While the German capital is not an academic hub on the scale of cities like London, Paris or Boston, three universities in Berlin feature in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017. The highest-ranked of these is Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin at joint 121st in the world, closely followed by Freie Universität Berlin at joint 123rd.

Berlin’s growing appeal as an international study destination is also due in part to greater provision of courses in English, particularly at postgraduate level. With a high quality of living, affordable costs, a liberal atmosphere and a happening party and music scene, the German capital has a huge amount to offer international students of all backgrounds and interests.

  Affordability rank: 16th

Average annual living expenses: €9,600 (~US$10,240), according to the Hertie School of Governance.

  6、

  7. Tokyo

For those who want to study amidst the hustle and bustle of the big city, they dont come much bigger and busier than Tokyo, one of the world’s most populous urban areas. Ranked 7th overall in the 2017 edition of the QS Best Student Cities index, Tokyo is Asia’s second-leading student city, behind Seoul(4th).

Such is the mind-blowing scale of the Japanese capital that even with 13 internationally ranked universities, it still has one of the lowest proportionate student populations of any city in the QS Best Student Cities index. Tokyo, then, is a city for those who vor total immersion in local culture rather than living in a student bubble.

The upshot of Tokyos gargantuan size is that it offers one of the most varied and cosmopolitan living environments on Earth. As one of the worlds three leading financial epicenters, alongside New York and London, it also provides enviable professional and internship opportunities, and claims the index’s strongest score in the Employer Activity category.

Alongside a high rating from graduate employers, Tokyo scores notably well in the Desirability component of the index, which considers both the overall quality of living in the city, and how in-demand it is among prospective international students.

  Affordability rank: 78th

Average annual living expenses: US$17,300 according to Globis.ac.jp

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): US$6,600

  Other things to mention:

Tokyo receives a high score for Desirability and is one of the 10 safest student cities in the index.

There are a number of scholarships available at universities in Tokyo, as well as some from the Japanese government.

  8. Boston

It might seem obvious that at least one US city should feature in the top 10 of a list of the world’s best cities for students – but this has not always been the case. The Affordability category of the QS Best Student Cities index has often kept the US’s leading academic hubs lower down the list. This year, however, Boston breaks a general national pattern, climbing five positions to rank eighth overall.

Boston is without doubt one of the world’s best-known academic hubs, and its position is further bolstered by universities located within the Greater Boston area, in the neighboring town of Cambridge. The most mous of these are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University –ranked first and third respectively in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017.

As one of the most historic cities in the US, Boston combines the hustle and bustle of a major metropolis and a happening arts, politics and culture scene, with an abundance of open green space and the stunning ll colors for which Massachusetts and the region of New England are mous. In addition to the academic might of MIT and Harvard, Boston is home to six more internationally ranked universities, forming a hub of intellectual endeavor which has earned it the nickname the Athens of America.

Thanks in part to the two showstoppers, MIT and Harvard, Boston has a very strong score in the University Rankings category of the Best Student Cities index. Its strongest score, however, is for Employer Activity, reflecting the strong international reputation of its institutions among graduate employers worldwide.

The city’s weakest score, predictably, is for Affordability, with fees at top US universities exceeding US$40,000 per year. But in ct both MIT and Harvard operate need-blind admission policies for all applicants, including international students, and generous financial aid packages mean Boston’s universities may not be as out-of-reach as they at first appear.

Meanwhile those who have studied in Boston rate the experience highly. The city comes seventh in the new Student View category, with particularly strong ratings for friendliness, ease of getting around, and arts and cultural offerings.

  Affordability rank: 114th

Average living expenses: US$20,750 per nine-month academic year, according to Boston University (equal to $27,666 per year).

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): $46,800

  Other things to mention:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, located near Boston, are both need-blind to international students. This means that your financial background is not considered when deciding to offer you a place and they pledge to meet your demonstrated financial need to enable you to attend.

You can calculate your own costs of studying in Boston using the Net Price Calculator, which also tells you what financial aid you may be eligible for.

  8、

  9. Munich

In accordance with Germany’s growing status as an international study destination, the country has not just one but two entries in the top 10 of the QS Best Student Cities 2017. Munich this year places ninth, just three places behind capital Berlin.

Located deep in Germanys southernmost region, Bavaria, Munich is the nation’s third-largest city, and its affluence and vibrancy make it a particularly desirable place to live. For many people outside of Germany, Munich is known first and foremost as the beer capital of the world – home to Oktoberfest, one of the worlds biggest and booziest parties, which every year draws tourists in their hoards to road-test the local brew.

Of course this is not the reason for Munich’s high score in the QS Best Student Cities index, but the city does score among the highest in the world in the Desirability category, which draws on a broad selection of sources designed to assess quality of life.

Most notably, however, Munich has the second highest score for Affordability out of all of the top 10 cities, close behind fellow German city Berlin. This is due to the ct that no tuition fees are charged for undergraduate students at public universities in Germany, regardless of nationality. Although living costs tend to be slightly higher in Munich than Berlin, the incentive of free tuition combined with the distinctive Bavarian culture combines to make Munich one of the most appealing study destinations in Western Europe.

As for universities in Munich, the city’s highest entrant in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017 is Technische Universität München at 60th, followed by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in joint 68th – Germany’s top two representatives in the world rankings this year.

  Affordability rank: 23rd

Average annual living expenses: €10,800, according to Speaking Denglish, a student blogger.

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): US$0 (Undergraduate)

  Other things to mention:

As with Berlin, tuition is free at all public universities at undergraduate/PhD level.

Living costs are slightly more expensive than at Berlin, with private accommodation more expensive than student halls.

  10. Vancouver

Following reports that both the US and UK may be losing some of their appeal, 2017 looks set to be a stellar year for Canada as an international study destination. In keeping with this general trend, Canadian cities have an extremely strong presence in the QS Best Student Cities 2017; while Montréaloccupies the overall top spot, Vancouver climbs three to take 10th place, with Toronto immediately behind.

Two universities in Vancouver feature in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, of which the highest-ranked is the University of British Columbia at 45th in the world. Vancouver’s other ranked institution, Simon Fraser University, offers a particularly unique study setting, thanks to the location of its main campus in the middle of the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area, just outside the city.

Whether you’re based in the city center or not, Vancouver has much to offer. The nearby Grouse, Seymour and Cypress mountains provide more than just a beautiful backdrop to the city – they’re also an incredibly popular destination for snowsports, offering some of the world’s best ski resorts.

Even in the center of Vancouver the great outdoors is never r away – beaches, forest and stunning mountains are all within easy reach. For those who prefer cultural pursuits, Vancouver also offers an array of brilliant nightlife, theatres and music – everything you’d expect from one of Canada’s most loved cities.

  Affordability rank: 51st

Average living expenses: CA$10,050 (~US$7,700) for every two semesters (eight months) according to Vancouver’s Columbia College, which is equal to CA$15,075 (~US$11,525) per year.

Average international tuition fees (at QS-ranked universities): US$18,000

  Other things to mention:

The University of British Columbia’s Graduate School has a Living Cost Calculator that allows you to get an estimate of your expenses based on your situation (e.g. whether you have children or plan to bring a partner).

Vancouver is the most expensive city to rent in Canada.

  10、

Figures given for living costs are average estimates only. Your budget may differ, depending on your lifestyle and spending habits.
