Summary

Do you want to teach young children? Or are you currently unqualified and working in an early childhood setting? If so, then Wintec’s Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is designed just for you.

You’ll enjoy sharing your knowledge with learners and watching their skills and confidence grow.

You’ll learn how to build and maintain relationships with children and discover how they learn, how to teach and what to teach.

You will also acquire the leadership, planning and organisational skills and values you need to be a professional teacher.

While studying you will be required to be in a licensed early childhood education setting for a minimum of 12 hours per week. This will allow you to practice what you are learning in a real setting.

Classes are one day and one evening per week and a minimum of 12 hours per week in a licensed early childhood education setting, as well as self-directed learning.

The first year of the programme focuses on learning and understanding theoretical and educational concepts; the second year focuses on the implementation of these concepts, and the third year builds on both the theory and the practical aspects while at the same time encouraging you to become a more critically reflective practitioner.

You will also study optional content appropriate for an early childhood teacher.

Career/Further Opportunities

Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. This will qualify graduates to teach in licensed early childhood education services.

The Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) may lead to employment as an Early Childhood Teacher in Childcare, Home based Childcare Visiting Teacher, Kindergarten and other early childhood settings. There is also the opportunity to become part of the wider teaching community in roles such as an Associate Teacher or Mentor. You may also choose to continue onto further study at postgraduate.

Entry criteria

Degree Level Academic Admission /University Entrance:

• NCEA Level 3, comprised of 60 credits at NCEA level 3 or above and 20 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above, including:
• 14 credits each at NCEA Level 3 in three approved subjects; and
• UE Literacy (10 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above made up of 5 credits each in reading and in writing); and
• UE Numeracy (10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above made up of specified achievement standards or a package of three numeracy unit standards – 26623, 26626, and 26627 – all three required).
• Or an overseas school qualification equivalent to University Entrance.

Candidates are required to be working (paid or voluntarily) for at least 12 hours per week in a licensed early childhood setting by the start of the programme.

Candidates under 20 years of age can only apply to this programme with University Entrance, specified above. Candidates must be a minimum of 17 years of age at the start of their programme. Candidates for whom English is an Additional Language must demonstrate their English language proficiency with a band score of 7.0 or higher for each component of the academic version of IELTS.
