Summary

New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4) with strands in Mental Health and Addiction Support, Social Services, Community Facilitation, Community Health Work.

This programme is ideal if you are currently working in, or interested in a career in, support work in the Health and Social Services sector. It has flexible delivery options available and you have the option of attending face to face classes (on campus option) or studying online (online option).

It will give you a strong foundation of knowledge and has been designed to help you develop the skills and behaviours required to work alongside individuals, family/whānau accessing social and community services.

In addition to several core courses, you’ll choose one of four strands as the focus of your studies: community facilitation, social services, mental health and addiction support or community health work.

To enhance your learning and develop your professional practice you’ll also undertake a practicum (200 hours) in a setting relevant to the strand you select.

Whichever delivery option you choose (on-campus or online)you will need to attend a compulsory two-day induction at the beginning of the programme. This is a vital part for student success, especially for those who haven’t studied for a while. These two days will enable students to get familiar with the systems and processes at Wintec and get connected with the various sources of support they can access while studying with us. Students also get to meet the tutors and other students. It is essential that students have access to a computer, notebook/tablet or a smartphone in order to access the course material and to complete the assessments.

This qualification meets the requirements for the recent Care and Support Workers Pay Equity Settlement. Completion will allow employees and those seeking to enter the industry to follow a career path with qualification attainment linked to wage increases.

Study pathways

After successful completion of the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing you will be eligible to apply for entry into our Bachelor of Social Work, or Paetahi Tumu Kōrero Bachelor of Counselling.

Entry criteria

Candidates are required to have:

• 24 credits at NCEA Level 1 or higher including 10 Literacy credits at NCEA Level 1 or above (5 credits each in reading and writing), and 10 Numeracy credits at NCEA Level 1 or above; or
• A relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2 or above; or
• Equivalent.

English Language Requirements:

IELTS score of 6.0 in the academic band, with no individual band score lower than 5.5; or equivalent; or TOEFL IBT score of 60 or TOEFL PBT score of 550 or Pearson score of 50
