    Summary

    This programme is open to candidates who have completed the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5) Veterinary Nursing Assistant strand and who wish to become a veterinary nurse.


    You will develop advanced skills in the care, management, handling and nursing of a range of companion animals in a clinical environment, as well as the ability to manage patients and clients, and follow protocols in all aspects of clinical veterinary practice.
    The programme includes a further 240 hours of work experience (in addition to the hours on the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5) and will prepare graduates for employment.

    Career/Further Opportunities

    Graduates of this qualification may be employed in a veterinary clinic as a veterinary nurse.

    Entry criteria

    1. New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5) Veterinary Nursing Assistant strand; or
    2. Equivalent

    All candidates must meet the general academic admission requirements. Special Admission and Provisional Entry criteria do not apply for the Veterinary Nursing programme.

    Selection Criteria

    a) To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programmes, including the ability to perform practical demonstrations and assessments. Candidates with disabilities are eligible to enrol in this programme and will be provided with the necessary resources to attain the learning outcomes where practicable, but at the time of enrolment must notify the Equity/Disability Co‐ordinator of their needs.
    b) Prior to commencing the programme all candidates will be required to undertake a Police check at a level sufficient for safe and effective practice within the field of veterinary nursing.
    c) All candidates will be require to make a declaration that they are physically able to safely handle and restrain domestic animals and that they have no known health condition that could preclude their close proximity to the common range of animals (e.g. cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds).

    English Language Requirements

    Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an academic International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.0 with no individual band score lower than 6.0; or equivalent.

    TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)

    TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 20)

    Cambridge English Examinations - FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
