Summary
If you wish to manage a quarry or alluvial operation with five or more staff or any opencast coal mining operation you require an A Grade Quarry Managers Certificate or A Grade Opencast Coal Mine Managers Certificate of Competency.
Tai Poutini Polytechnic is offering the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Mining Administration A Grade Surface Extraction) Level 5 which on completion will provide you with the knowledge, skills and unit standards to apply for your chosen A Grade Certificate of Competency.
For details of the additional statutory requirements to be met before Certificates of Competence can be awarded, candidates should refer to the Requirements of Holders of Certificates of Competence, under the Health and Safety in Employment (Mining Operations and Quarrying Operations) Regulations 2013.
Delivery
Enrolment in this qualification will require you to participate in structured training sessions, the completion of practical tasks on your worksite, and the completion of assessments to demonstrate your learning and application of knowledge.
This training will require a commitment from your employer to ensure your availability for the training sessions and to facilitate appropriate learning situations on your worksites.
The qualification is delivered over the period of a year and will require significant commitment from the learner to achieve the required outcomes.
Core Elements
Inspect and report and extractive site and operations
Review and implement plans for ongoing operations of an extractive site
Demonstrate knowledge of the co-ordinated incident management system (CIMS)
Describe the roles and functions of a CIMS Incident Management Team (IMT) at an incident
Analyse human factors present in workplace practices to determine how they contribute to incidents at an extractive site
Plan storage for product processed at extractive sites
Demonstrate knowledge of the application of regulatory requirements to manage an extractive site
Select excavation and transportation plant for surface extraction
Demonstrate knowledge of planning rehabilitation operations of an extractive site
Demonstrate knowledge of crushing and screening plant for extractive industries
Design and maintain stockpiles and sloping surfaces in surface excavations and stockpiles
Demonstrate knowledge of the geological nature of surface extraction sites
Demonstrate knowledge of extraction methods and the effects of geological features on these methods
PREREQUISTE
Prior award of National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Mining Administration Surface Extraction B Grade) (Level 5)
Applicants must be currently working in the extractives industry or have industry experience
Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 or above Certificate of Competency

Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0

The B Grade qualification must be awarded before the award of this qualification.
