- Awareness of the business and legal issues confronting visual practitioners in visual and screen art, implications of copyright and how to claim and obtain the rights to copyright material
- Gain an understanding of the major movements, historical periods and key ideas which gave context to art practice
- Develop fundamental drawing skills essential as an analytical, descriptive and creative tool and explore form, tone and composition of the human figure
- Students will build on their understanding of the history of art through engagement with an overview of art in the Pacific with particular focus on its bicultural and emerging multicultural character
- Investigate and analyse key theorists and critics relevant to student's research questioning
- Apply broad knowledge, and practical and conceptual skills in the production of arts, craft and/or design work
- Use investigative tools with creative processes, methods and technologies to develop responses to a brief and solve problems
- Use research to support the development of ideas and to inform own work within conventions and contexts in arts, craft and/or design
- Critique own work and the work of others, communicate in a range of situations, and present own resolved work in simulated contexts
- Apply professional practices to manage projects/briefs within defined guidelines, and select potential education and employment pathways in arts, craft and/or design
- A minimum of 120 credits in accordance with the Programme schedule for the New Zealand Diploma in Arts and Design (Level 5)
- The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Diploma in Arts and Design (Level 5) full-time over one year or part-time over two years

- Bachelor of Visual Arts
- IELTS test - Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
- TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score 5 TWE)
- TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
- Cambridge English Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 162 No less than 154 in each skill. OET at Grade C in all sub-tests.
- NZCEL – Level 4 with the Academic endorsement
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic score of 42
- City and Guilds IESOL – B2 Communicator with a score of 42
- Language Cert – B2 Communicator IESOL (LRWS) with High PASS

For those wishing to continue their study in the area of Arts the options at SIT are:
Entry criteria
Successful completion of the New Zealand Certificate in Creativity (Level 4), or application by academic qualification. Students are required to submit a portfolio and attend an interview.
School Leavers
Applicants should be a minimum of 18 years of age, have completed a minimum of 4 years’ secondary education, and have attained a minimum of 12 NCEA credits at Level 2.
Mature Applicants
Applicants over the age of 20 years will be considered where they can demonstrate the ability to succeed in a programme.
