Summary

Anyone considering a career in writing should consider this programme as it provides skills, techniques and critical understanding to apply to the composition of original texts. We offer papers in fiction (of all genres), non-fiction, poetry and elementary proof-reading and editing.

What you will learn

You will learn to:

• Write a publishable piece of writing in English or Te Reo 毛利, in the genres of children’s or adult literature
• Demonstrate a basic level of editing skills
• Apply the techniques of literary critique to your own and others’ work
• Recognise and compare some of the fundamental elements of literary style
• Use a word-processing programme to present manuscripts to an acceptable standard
• Discuss bicultural issues

Entry criteria

All applicants must:

• be at least 16 years old at the time the programme commences
• be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level
• be physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes

Computer literacy is an entry requirement for this online programme as is ready access to a computer.

English Requirements:

• Academic IELTS score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
• TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
• TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) score of 46 (with a writing score of 20)
• FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill
• NZCEL Level 4 with the Academic endorsement
• PToE (Academic) score of 42
• City & Guilds IESOL - B2 Communicator with a score of 42
