The programme is supported by the Industry Training Association Building (ITaB) scheme and the BCITO.

As a graduate, you will be qualified to work as entry-level construction site workers, pre-cut factory workers, and in the retail sector of the building and construction industry.

You will learn theory, first aid and also practical skills including workplace training.

This qualification will assist you in obtaining an apprenticeship.

Career opportunities and pathways

Once you graduate, you will be able to follow safe working practices in a carpentry workshop and perform basic operations with hand, power and machine tools.

You will be qualified to work as entry-level construction site workers, pre-cut factory workers and in the retail sector of the building and construction industry.

This qualification will assist you in obtaining an apprenticeship and completing the practical requirements towards the National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4).

Entry criteria

Academic requirements

Applicants under 20 years old

At least 8 credits NCEA Level 1 showing basic literacy or equivalent;
At least 8 credits NCEA Level 1 showing basic numeracy or equivalent.

Applicants 20 years or over

There are no minimum academic entry requirements.

English Language requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level.

Those students whose first language is not English should have:

An international English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score of at least 5.5 (with at least 5.0 in each band) issued within the last two years;
