Work at sea on a large seagoing vessel

This Maritime Crewing (Level 3) programme caters for entry-level deck and engine room crew keen to work at sea on large seagoing vessels. You have the option to complete the programme with one of two strands: Deck Crewing and Engineering. Each strand meets the competency standards required under STCW and as specified in the Maritime New Zealand Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.

Completion of this qualification is a prerequisite to applying for a

Maritime New Zealand STCW Deck Watch Rating licence, OR

Maritime New Zealand STCW Engine Watch Rating licence.

Either of these licences will allow you to work with limited supervision as crew on vessels operating in unlimited waters.

What will I learn?

Graduates of this programme will be able to demonstrate safe and sustainable working practices and contribute to effective communications and relationships on board a vessel.

Graduates of the Deck Crewing Strand will also be able to assist with vessel navigation at the support level.

Graduates of the Engineering Strand will also be able to assist with marine engineering at the support level.

Entry criteria

Academic requirements

There are no minimum academic requirements for entry to the Maritime Crewing Programmes.

English language requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Those students whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score.

Level 3 Programmes: IELTS of at least 5 (with no band score lower than 5.0) issued within the last two years, or equivalent.

Level 4 Programmes: IELTS of at least 5.5 (with no band score lower than 5.0) issued within the last two years, or equivalent.
