Get real insight into the sport and recreation industry with real-world experience.

Learn to deliver sport, fitness and recreation programmes to school, community and outdoor groups. Practical workplace experience gives you the opportunity to teach, coach or facilitate in a range of sport, recreation and fitness environments.

Develop an understanding of sport management, and sport as a science, as a social experience, and as a business.

Career opportunities

School sports coordinator, recreation programmer, sport specific coach, coaching coordinator, sport administrator, event manager, aquatic centre employee, outdoor recreation facilitator and supervisor, personal trainer or small business entrepreneur.

Programme structure

Students complete the following courses:

Generic Courses

• Applied Sport Science
• Human Anatomy and Physiology
• Introduction to Sport as a Business
• Introduction to Sport Management
• Sport Sociology
• Workplace Practicum.

Students choose at least one of the following:

Elective Courses

• Exercise Prescription for Personal Trainers
• Outdoor Leader
• Sport Pedagogy 2.

Further study

Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science

Entry criteria

Certificate in Applied Sport and Recreation (Level 4) or equivalent

Referee statement from one of the following:

Employer, teacher, community leader or church leader verifying the person’s:

• Potential to work safely with community groups in a variety of settings
• Current professional strengths
• Current personal strengths
• Community/ school/club involvement in sport and recreation

Applicants who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) (Academic) band score of 6.0 (with no score below 5.5)

OR a TOEFL Internet Based Test (pBT) Score of 550 (with an essay score 5 TWE) (iBT) score of 60 (with a writing score of 20)

OR a Cambridge English FCE with a pass at Grade B or CAE with a score of 52

OR NZCEL level 5 with the Academic endorsement,

OR Pearson Test of English (PToE Academic) score of 50,

OR City and Guilds IESOL B2 Communicator with a score of 66

Applicants being prepared to undergo a Police check for a criminal record. e.g. no convictions for violence against a person, particularly sexual violation. A criminal record will not automatically exclude an applicant from entry to the programme.

Applicants must be free of chemical addictions.
