Leading to the Award of National Certificate in Security (Level 3 or 4) with strands in Event Security, Mobile Patrol, Retail Security, and Site Security
Programme highlights
The National Certificate in Security is a part-time work based training programme designed for people who are already employed within the security industry. The delivery of the programme is flexible towards the hours security staff operate and considers both the current and future needs of the New Zealand security industry.
Students will receive tuition through online learning, at classes and on-site workshops, and will also have work-based training opportunities to gain both theoretical and practical skills and knowledge. Evening classes will be also be offered.

Security in Challenging Situations (Level 4)
Security Knowledge (Level 3)
With options in:
Conduct Mobile Security Patrol (Level 4)
Conduct Event Security (Level 3)
Conduct Site Security (Level 3)

Course outlines
Security in Challenging Situations (Level 4)
The purpose of this course is to train security officers how to use force in the course of their duties (both legal and physical), and respond to threats of violence. The students will gain the skills to manage security incidents, breaches and process suspects and evidence as well as responding to fire and other emergencies and preventative action with respect to potential hazards. The course further examines terrorism and measures required to reduce risks presented by terrorists to specific targets.
Security Knowledge (Level 3)
The purpose of this course is to gain knowledge of police responsibilities, requirements and procedures and the judicial systems as it relates to security industry. The students are also taught how to operate electronic communications equipment, electronic security systems and computer systems equipment.
Conduct Mobile Security Patrol (Level 4)
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge of mobile patrol policies and procedures; and prepares students to conduct mobile security patrols. Students will apply safe and secure vehicle operation; conduct vehicle-mounted mobile patrol tasks and patrol site tasks.
Conduct Event Security (Level 3)
This course provides students with the knowledge of security policies and procedures at a specific event in the areas of maintaining event security, conducting event site patrols, controlling event access and maintaining event security watch. In this course students are trained to
participate in team activities, gain knowledge and application of risk management; enhance customer and public relations, implement tasks, duties and responsibilities related to health and safety as an event security officer.
Conduct Site Security (Level 3)
This course provides students with the knowledge of security policies and procedures at a specific site. Graduates will have the knowledge and ability to maintain site security, describe and operate site security systems and equipment, maintain site security, conduct site patrols and control site access. In this course students gain the knowledge and application of risk management; enhance customer and public relations, implement tasks, duties and responsibilities related to health and safety as a site security officer.
Conduct Retail Security (Level 3)
This course provides students with the knowledge of security policies and procedures applicable to specific retail sites.
Further training or study
National Certificate in Security Management (Supervision) (Level 5), National Diploma in Security (Level 6) or National Diploma in Security Management (Level 6)
Entry criteria
Applicants must all of the following entry requirements:
Be at least 18 years of age or turn 18 years of age before completion of the programme (to enable students to seek the Security Guard Certificate of Approval or Security Guard Licence)
and
Have a National Certificate in Security Level 2
and
Be employed within the security industry for a minimum of 20 hours per week
and
Have English competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. An applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence meeting the NZQA requirements for English Language.
International students are required to meet the minimum English language requirements for this level.
