Programme highlights

Learn intermediate level English language skills, whether you're a local or international student, and apply them in familiar settings and to familiar topics.

Develop the skills to understand the main points, key details and factual information in spoken English, and in an extended conversation. Speak more naturally and fluently to express your ideas, and keep a conversation going. Read and understand a range of texts. Find and gather information for a specific purpose. Write clearly in paragraphs, with reasonable accuracy and using a range of styles.

Programme structure

The programme will consist of four compulsory courses, worth 15 credits each.

For the General Qualifier:

• Listening 3 General
• Speaking 3 General
• Reading 3 General
• Writing 3 General

Further training or study

NZ Certificate in English Language Level 4 (General/Academic)

Entry criteria

Applicants must meet the following entry criteria:

Have New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2)

Or

Provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 4.0- 4.5

Or

A level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) high A2 – low B1

Selection requirements

Applicants will be selected in order of completed applications received.

The application process consists of an interview on enquiry or at an agreed interview appointment dependant on lecturer availability. The applicant's previous English learning experience, their current educational/learning goals, and their preferred qualifier will be established in this interview. A writing sample will be collected, and the interviewer will make a provisional assessment of the applicant's level in speaking and listening. A placement test to confirm level will be administered following the interview.

Provisional Entry

Students who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to be enrolled as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicates they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students who have not attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the Faculty Dean.
