Programme highlights
Get the skills and knowledge you'll require for an entry-level marine engineer position on wide range of domestic vessels and foreign going fishing ships.
Learn how to operate, monitor and maintain engine room and auxiliary equipment and how to apply safe and sustainable working practices to contribute to effective communication and emergency response on board a vessel.
This qualification is designed to meet the requirements for training for the MNZ Marine Engineer Class 6 and Marine Engineer Class 5 Certificate of Competence issued by Maritime New Zealand.

Graduates can also progress to higher-level marine engineering qualifications leading to Marine Engineer Class 1 (MEC 1) under the Maritime New Zealand Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
Entry criteria
Entry to this programme is open.
Candidates intending to sit for their Maritime Licenses must meet the additional requirements prescribed by Maritime NZ under Maritime Rule Part 32 for these Licenses.
MNZ regulations prescribe varying amounts of sea going experience in different contexts for different levels of certification. NZMS will ensure that students are aware of MNZ requirements through course information and counselling of students. Subject to current MNZ requirements the sea time hours must be met for the license(s).
English Language entry requirements
Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English.
IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower then 5
TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)
TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 20)
Cambridge English Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
