Programme highlights
Meet the demand for qualified marine electro-technology engineers, with an internationally recognised diploma.
This qualification is designed for students who want to work as officers on wide range of foreign going ships, from cruise liners, ferries, and container vessels through to support vessels in the oil and gas industry. The programme prepares you for an interesting career in an international industry, which has solid demand for well-trained and motivated people.
Students combine practical on-board sea-time and onshore training, to get a broad knowledge of marine vessel electro-technology systems. You will learn how to monitor, maintain and repair shipboard electrical, electronic and control equipment and auxiliary systems along, with maritime principles, practices and safety.
This qualification includes New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 4) combined with seatime which forms the first year of our three Diploma's (Nautical Science, Marine Engineering and Marine Electro-Technology (Level 6). It is expected that you will continue on to one of these Diploma's.

Further training or study
Completion of this qualification is a pre-requisite to applying for a Maritime New Zealand Electro technical Officer Certificate. The corresponding Maritime New Zealand Electro-technical Officer (ETO) certificate of competency is the most senior maritime electro-technical role.
Entry criteria
Students must produce evidence of having met the medical and eyesight standards currently in force for marine engineering officers by Maritime New Zealand. These are statutory requirements for working on ships.

These attributes will normally be assessed by way of an interview and through consideration of the written application. Alternative means to assess these criteria will be adopted where an interview is not practicable, e.g. In the case of international students.
English Language Entry Requirements
Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Evidence of English language ability to a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 across all academic bands) for students whom English is not their first language.
Any applicant whose first language is not English will be required to provide evidence of their English language competency.
Completion of this programme does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand license. All persons wishing to qualify for a seafarer license must also check the Maritime New Zealand prior certification and minimum service requirements for that license.
