Get an internationally recognised qualification that can lead to a well-paid position in a foreign-going career with global shipping companies.
Combine practical sea-time and training ashore to build on your knowledge in navigation methods, radar, bridge systems, hazards, compass work, meteorology, maritime practices, ship properties and shipboard communications.
Develop the skills and ability to accept positions of leadership and high responsibility immediately after graduation.
You can supplement your sea-time experience in our state-of-the-art full mission bridge simulator.
Successful students will, on completion of the required sea time, also gain the internationally recognised Watch Keeper Deck Certificate of Competency (Maritime New Zealand).

Entry criteria
Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
General
Students intending to pursue a seagoing career must produce evidence of having met the medical and eyesight standards currently in force by Maritime New Zealand. These are statutory requirements for working on ships;
and
Completed the academic component of the New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing – Able Seafarer Deck strand (L4);
or
Students already at sea provide evidence of sea time.
Academic
Applicants must meet the following criteria for admission into the programme
Applicants with no seagoing experience
1. NCEA: a minimum of 48 credits at level 2 and above, or equivalent
i. including a minimum of 8 credits at level 2 or higher in English language and
ii. 14 credits in either Mathematics (calculus, algebra or equivalent) or Physics
English Language entry requirements
Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English.
International students will demonstrate this by meeting the current NZQA requirements:
IELTS test - Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5
TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18)
Cambridge English Examinations – FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
