Summary

The MPH programme equips you with the knowledge and competencies to contribute to public health management and policy, disease control and health promotion across a wide range of populations. The MPH provides you with the opportunity to plan, implement and complete a practice project or an evaluation project or research study in an area of public or community health.

The public health programme provides education with a strong community health development perspective. It emphasises the role of social, economic, cultural, educational, environmental and other societal factors in the production and maintenance of individual and community well-being. It is designed to produce graduates with the conceptual and research knowledge for understanding community health priorities, developing and implementing community health interventions and critically evaluating their effects across a range of community health settings. The public health programme is underpinned with a commitment to principles of equity, social justice, empowerment and community participation and ownership.

Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health papers (120 points) and

• HEAL999 Thesis (120 points) Or
• HEAL998 Thesis (90 points) plus approved optional papers totalling 30 points Or
• HEAL901 Dissertation (60 points) plus approved optional papers totalling 60 points.

An MPH graduate (in addition to the criteria for the PGDipPH) will be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge and critical application of principles of social justice, inclusion and community participation in public health
• Identify and critically analyse public health issues from a range of perspectives including biological, environmental, behavioural, occupational, social and cultural determinants
• Demonstrate critical thinking in the development and evaluation of public health practice
• Demonstrate critical awareness of political, ethical and cultural issues embedded in public health in New Zealand (Treaty of Waitangi in particular) and international contexts
• Demonstrate advanced skills in critical inquiry, including searching and synthesizing research literature, best practice models, theory and other relevant evidence to support public health research, policy and practice
• Demonstrate advanced skills in academic writing and other forms of scholarly communication for public health
• Plan, implement and complete a primary research project in an area of public health
• Contribute to the wider research evidence base and scholarly debates in public health

AND

• Demonstrate in-depth understanding and application of a particular specialism in public health and within a global context OR
• Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and understanding across a number of public health topics and within a global context

Entry criteria

You need to have completed one of the following to a merit standard in a relevant field:

• Bachelor's degree
• Graduate diploma
• Professional qualification equivalent to a 3-year undergraduate degree
• Professional experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree or recognised professional qualification

English Language requirements:

Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; GIE with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.
