Summary

The Master of Visual Arts is a practice-based research degree that enables visual art/ fine art graduates to explore in-depth a territory of personal interest in art practice. Emphasis is on critical enquiry through both art practice and contextual research.

Visual artists may work with or through a host of practices, for example: painting, print, photography, sculpture, drawing, digital and moving image, installation, sound and performance.

Admission is based on the submission of a proposal outlining the territory of exploration, and the nature of the project to be undertaken by the applicant. It is useful and usual for potential applicants to make an appointment to discuss their interests, before submitting their proposal.

The degree is highly flexible, enabling students from a variety of backgrounds to extend and develop their individual interests and related expertise. Students work within the supportive culture of a studio environment involving group discussion, and critique of each other's work. They enjoy individual studio spaces, supervisory support, specialist facilities with extended access hours, and library and learning centre facilities. As part of a vital and innovative art community students' research will contribute to diverse and emerging modalities and discourses in creative practice.

Papers - 180 points in total

ARDN800 Research Methods (15 Points)

SELECT a further 45 points from the elective papers listed below

AND

VSAR999 Thesis (120 points)

Enrolment in a thesis is subject to achieving at least a B- average in course work papers including a pass in Research Methods and approval of research proposal.

Entry criteria

Applicants must have completed the Bachelor of Visual Arts or equivalent with a B grade average or higher in the papers at level 7 or above.

English Language requirements:

Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; GIE with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.
