Summary

The PhD is a thesis-based research degree that is granted on the basis of an original and substantial contribution to knowledge. The Faculty of Culture and Society encourages and supports innovative interdisciplinary research.

We offer PhD candidates the opportunity to work collaboratively with a cohort of staff who are active researchers and practitioners to provide a unique interdisciplinary level of engagement and mentorship in their chosen areas of research study.

Candidates develop critical insight, wisdom and creativity in theories and practices to form new knowledge that challenges and extends conventional thinking and that is highly valued in education and industry.

• Academic literacies
• Corrective feedback
• Creative writing
• Discourse analysis
• English and New Media Studies

• Language teaching and learning
• Migrant and refugee identity, policy and settlement
• Policy and media analysis
• Refugee and migrant education
• Sociolinguistics

Entry criteria

• A master’s degree with honours; or,
• A bachelor’s degree with honours (equivalent to four years of study)

The degree must have a standard equivalent to first class or second class (first division) honours. The degree should include advanced learning in research, execution of a research project and a written report on the research..

English Language requirements:

Minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall with all bands 6.0 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 90; Certificate in English for Academic Study (CertEAS) with A grade; GIE with B+ grade; CAE minimum overall score of 176; PTE minimum overall score of 58.
