Flexibility

Massey’s Bachelor of Business (Economics) gives you lots of flexibility in the subjects that you study. You will gain a strong grounding in economic theory as well as a broad understanding of the core elements of business such as accountancy, finance, marketing and management.

You can specialise in areas including quantitative methods, international trade, resource and environmental economics, financial economics, managerial economics and public policy.

A focus on economics

If you know you would like to focus on economics, consider Massey’s Bachelor of Applied Economics which has a more detailed economics study programme. The economics major in the Bachelor of Business gives you a broad and well-rounded education in business. You’ll get a strong grounding in economics, but in a programme that is less rigorous and specialized than the Bachelor of Applied Economics.

Treasury, the Reserve Bank and the World Bank all recruit economics graduates. However, on graduating in economics you are not restricted to a career as an ‘economist’. Your economics degree can be the gateway to employment in many other areas, like management, planning, politics, education, finance and banking, and journalism and the media. You can design your economics major to meet your interests and career objectives.

Entry criteria

Students must have successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance.

Those who have completed 3 x B at level 5 or 6 passes in the New Zealand Diploma of Business may apply for entry into a Bachelor's programme. An NZQA transcript as formal evidence of the NZDipBus results is required before credit will be assessed and only papers with a minimum grade of B will be assessed for credit. The English language requirements can be met by: A minimum IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) used to gain entry to the NZDipBus or, a recent IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 5.5.

English Language Requirements:

• IELTS score of 6.0 (no band less than 5.5)
• TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (min 19 in Writing)
• PTE Academic score of 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills)
• Cambridge English score of 170
