Summary

The degree responds to a radical shift in the commercial music industry in which primary sources of revenue and distribution models have changed. In the current digital music ecology, successful practioners are multi-discursive, media-savvy impresarios who are skilled in using and developing new production tools and distribution networks and are in control of live performance and merchandising. Students of Commercial Music at Massey become familiar with composition and production techniques for contemporary music making, and are also able to demonstrate an understanding of digital rights, music branding and music marketing that differs from traditional business models.

Music Technology

You’ll study software and hardware development, electronics, sound engineering and production, live sound and lighting, and concepts for developing new musical interfaces.

Once we know you have the basics, you will be designing and building your own instruments and applications.

Bachelor of Commercial Music structure

Students have specialist classes in their chosen major, but also study a range of shared courses and collaborate each semester on external projects, eg staging a live show, staging and promoting a tour, and developing media campaigns.

Entry criteria

Students must have successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance.

• TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (min 19 in Writing)
• PTE Academic score of 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills)
