What is it Like?

If you are interested in computing, but would rather work with people than machines, would rather reach out to clients than sit at a computer writing code, or prefer creativity to mathematics, then the information systems major could be the right choice for you.

Information systems underlie all aspects of our lives, whether we are working, studying or at leisure. We spend more and more of our time online.

All around us systems like banking, manufacturing and transport are increasingly automated. More and more data is being created daily (‘Big Data’). This changes the way that government agencies and businesses process and apply information about their products, services, customers and citizens. Such systems are not only about technology. Their success depends on their designers having an expert understanding of computer software and hardware and the social, human and organisational contexts of these systems.

When you study information systems at Massey you will gain skills in practical technical areas, such as how to create interactive web sites or how to use databases to manage corporate data. You will also learn the essential soft skills of working with the users of IT systems, learning to understand their needs and how systems can be designed to meet them. You will understand the impact of ICT from an enterprise perspective, seeing how information systems are part of the larger mission of an organisation. You will learn about computer systems not just from the perspective of the system developer, but from the perspective of the manager, the administrator, the salesperson and the entrepreneur.

Entry criteria

All students must have a university entrance qualification. However, it is strongly recommended that students have studied Mathematics at NCEA level 2.

English language requirements:

• IELTS score of 6.0 (no band less than 5.5)
• TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (min 19 in Writing)
• PTE Academic score of 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills)
• Cambridge English score of 170
