WHAT IS IT LIKE?

Massey is ranked in the world’s top 200 universities for sociology by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking.

Sociology seeks to understand and describe our own local society and the wider global setting. It is among the most fundamental of the social sciences, with perhaps the broadest scope. There are sociologists interested in virtually all aspects of the social world. It goes beyond surface appearances in an attempt to find out how things really work.

Sociologists ask many questions. What divides or unites social groups? What causes the inequalities we see in society? How does power actually operate? Questions like these are crucial to understanding some of the biggest issues facing the world today.

Careers

Sociology can lead to jobs in human resource management, policy analysis, social research, and teaching. Employers value the combination of theoretical and research knowledge, analytical strengths, communication skills, and practical know-how of our graduates.

Requirements

The requirements for the Diploma in Arts endorsed in Sociology are:

Pass 230.111 Tū Kupu: Writing and Inquiry

230.112 Tū Arohae: Critical Thinking

Pass 75 credits in Sociology consisting of:

• at least 45 credits at 200- and 300-level in Sociology
• 30 credits at any level in Sociology

The remaining 15 credits for the Diploma in Arts can be from Part II of the schedule for the Bachelor of Arts degree (including further courses from the endorsement subject) and/or courses offered in other undergraduate degrees.

Entry criteria

Applicants must have completed New Zealand secondary school qualification or other equivalent overseas qualification.

English Language Requirements:

• IELTS score of 5.0 (no band less than 5.0)
• TOEFL iBT score of 61 overall (min 17 in Reading & Writing)
• PTE Academic score of 36 Overall (min 36 in communicative skills)
• Cambridge English score of 155
