Summary
Further your study and enhance your career potential with advanced courses and supervised research alongside some of New Zealand’s leading scholars.
Programme overview
You can take the one-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) as a qualification in its own right after a Bachelor of Arts, or as a pathway to a one-year Master of Arts.
Postgraduate study is a unique opportunity to deepen your study of an academic area that you find intellectually rewarding and personally meaningful.
As well as deepening your knowledge in small classes with some of New Zealand’s leading scholars, you can hone advanced skills that will be an advantage in any career.
Statistics
We live in an information age. Computers allow us to collect and store information in previously undreamed of quantities.
But raw, undigested data stored on computers are useless until people can make sense of them. Statistics is the art and science of extracting meaning from data, and applies to almost any field. Statisticians design studies, analyse data, make projections and help to make decisions.
Postgraduate study in Statistics is an opportunity to design and apply quantitative techniques to your chosen discipline. Staff in the department have technical expertise in: linear and non-linear statistical modelling; statistical computing; sample survey theory; statistics education; Bayesian methods; medical statistics; statistical genetics; non-parametric statistics; applied probability; forensic science; a wide variety of statistical applications to other disciplines.
Statistics and your career
Some training in statistics can help make you more effective in almost any career. A background in Statistics can lead to careers in banks; insurance, finance or market research companies; manufacturing; private consultancy; crown research institutes and health enterprises; local bodies and government agencies such as the New Zealand Treasury, Statistics New Zealand, Ag Research and MAFTech. Successful statisticians often begin in technical roles and end up in management.
