Being a primary or intermediate school teacher is a rewarding and enriching career. Through this degree qualification in primary teaching you will learn effective teaching techniques that are based on proven educational theories and informed by leading research.

What you'll learn

In the first year you will:

• Be introduced to the study of education, the New Zealand curriculum and effective teaching practice.
• Gain first-hand experience of teaching during your practicum.
• Develop your knowledge and skills in the areas of literacy, numeracy and 毛利 language and culture.

In subsequent years:

• You move on to more advanced study of education, gain more practical experience, continue to develop your knowledge of the curriculum and undertake one General Education course.
• You will spend ten weeks in one school on practicum during your final year, which allows you a deeper insight into how classrooms are set up and to track changes in student performance over that year. This will allow a smooth transition from being a student teacher to a beginning teacher upon graduation from the University.
• In your final year, you will also select three courses to study from a range of specialist education and curriculum options.

Career opportunities

You will be well qualified to teach new entrants through to Year 8 in New Zealand schools and overseas. You may also apply for teaching positions in secondary schools in areas such as reading and language support.

You will be eligible to apply for provisional teacher registration, have the opportunity to earn a salary at degree level and be able to network with other professional educators.

This internationally recognised degree qualification combined with the skills you have developed in organisation, planning and management are also desirable in alternate areas such as human resources, training or educational roles in a variety of organisations.

Further study

After completing a BEd(Tchg) degree you could go on to postgraduate study to further your knowledge and skills and to enhance your career and salary opportunities.

The faculty offers a wide range of options, including:

• Bachelor of Education (Teaching) (Honours)
• Graduate Diploma of TESSOL
• Postgraduate Diploma in Education
• Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership
• You could then go on to study at master’s and doctoral level.

Entry criteria

Secondary school qualifications

You need to have one of the following:

• International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum total score of 24.
• General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level. You must have completed a minimum of three A-Level subjects with at least a 'C' grade or higher. General Studies or similar general papers cannot be included.

GCE ‘A’ Level requirements apply to ‘A’ Level qualifications examined by bodies such as AQA, OCR, Edexcel, WJEC, CCEA, Pearson Education Limited and CIE taken outside of New Zealand.

English language requirements:

IELTS 7.0; TOEFL (iBT) 100; TOEFL (paper-based) 600; CAE or CPE 185; PTE 65; MELAB 90.
