Course details
Summary
Extend your knowledge in your specialist area at postgraduate level with our honours programme.
The Bachelor of Science (Honours) programme involves one year of full-time study, or two years of part-time study, after you have completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science.
Medical Physics and Imaging Technology
There is a shortage of personnel in the medical industries who are proficient in the complementary areas of physics, biology and physiology and skilled in the design and application of Imaging Technologies. This undergraduate pathway followed by the BSc Honour in MPIT prepares you for these roles, therefore you will be very employable as an MPIT graduate. You will cultivate your skills in appropriate areas of physics and biomedical sciences, so you should already have a strong background in physics, biology and calculus. This will be supplemented by specialist research-led training in biophotonics, biomedical imaging and instrumentation.
Students graduating from this specialization will have the capacity to contribute at an advanced level across a wide range of related fields. Students entering this specialization will also have the opportunity to proceed to postgraduate study in Medical Physics, Biophotonics, Biomedical Imaging or Biophysics.
Students entering this programme should have a good background in Physics and Mathematics. The specialization involves a solid grounding in these subjects with extensive specialist training in imaging and physiology.
Requirements:
45 points: PHYSICS 787
60 points: MEDSCI 703, 737, PHYSICS 701, 780
15 points from MEDSCI 701-740, PHYSICS 701-780,791
Recommended:
On top of the BSc in physics core papers, it is recommended that you have taken: PHYSICS 244, 340, 325 and 326.
Additionally, students who have completed the common year in science can complement their curriculum with these papers from the FHMS schedule: MEDSCI 205, 206 and 309.
Career opportunities
In New Zealand and in all developed nations there is growing demand for staff with an understanding of physics as well as physiology and biology. At the University of Auckland, the MPIT programme has been designed with particular input from the Australasian College of Physical Scientists & Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) and local industries most likely to recruit graduates. Several former students who have carried out their fourth year projects with Medical physicists or in the medical school as well as on industrial projects. ADHBs are recruiting medical physicists every year and companies such as Orion Health or Cubic Defense are constantly seeking graduates from this programme. Other employment has been gained in local District Health Boards.
