Programme overview

Teaching at secondary (high school) level is an opportunity to inspire learners on the edge of adulthood with your passion for a specialised subject area.

During this programme you will study educational theory and practice specific to secondary teaching and learn the curriculum specific to your subject area(s). With a strong emphasis on the importance of gaining practical experience, you will undertake work in secondary classrooms in your practicum element.

By the end of the programme you will be eligible to apply for provisional teacher certification as a practising teacher in secondary schools.

Programme structure

To pass this programme you must complete 120 points. This is made up of two courses (60 points) and two electives (60 points).

Where could this programme take you?

While many graduates go on to teach in secondary schools in New Zealand, the programme will also provide you with transferable skills that can be applied to a range of careers. By already holding a bachelors degree you will be eligible to start on a higher step of the salary scale in services covered by the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) teaching collective agreement for secondary school teachers.

Entry criteria

You must have completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline at a recognised university (or similar institution) with advanced level courses in a subjects.

You will need a GPE of 2.4.

English language requirements:
IELTS 6.5; TOEFL (iBT) 90; TOEFL (paper-based) 575; CAE or CPE 176; PTE 58; MELAB 85.
