Summary
Engage in advanced scholarship and contribute your own research to the existing knowledge in your field.
In a research masters you can contribute to the existing knowledge in your field by defining and managing a research project alongside some of New Zealand’s leading scholars.
In a taught masters you can deepen your knowledge in small classes with these leading scholars and complete a smaller research project such as a dissertation.
Applied Linguistics
Applied Linguistics draws on a variety of disciplines to formulate solutions to real world language problems. We address issues such as multilingualism, the learning of foreign languages and the assessment of language proficiency.
Applied Linguistics and your career
An MA in Applied Linguistics could lead to a senior position in language teaching (such as a director of studies or curriculum adviser), a career in language teacher education or language policy making, or academic research in the field of applied linguistics.
Aims of the programme
The MA in Applied Linguistics aims to:
1. Provide you with a sound knowledge base in the key areas of enquiry in Applied Linguistics.
2. Develop your ability to utilize technical knowledge from a variety of areas to address real-world problems concerning the learning, use, teaching and assessment of language.
3. Equip you with the research skills needed to investigate real-world problems concerning the learning, use, teaching and assessment of language.
Required course of study
120-point (one-year) MA
The 120 point MA requires one year of full-time study. It may be taken as either a research or taught masters.
240-point (two-year) MA
The 240-point MA requires two consecutive years of full-time study. The MA in Applied Linguistics is available as a research or taught masters.

Entry criteria
Admission for 120-point (1 year) programme: applicants must have completed a BA(Hons) or PGDipArts in Linguistics, or in Language Teaching, or a language, or another relevant subject, or a PGDipLT, or equivalent. Admission for 240-point (2 years) programme: applicants must have completed either a Bachelor degree with a major in one of the following, or equivalent: Linguistics and English Language Teaching, English Language Acquisition and Linguistics, TESOL or language teaching, Linguistics, a language, Education or a Bachelor degree and at least two years of teaching experience.
English language requirements:
IELTS 7.0; TOEFL (iBT) 100; TOEFL (paper-based) 600; CAE or CPE 185; PTE 65; MELAB 90.
