Summary
Engage in advanced scholarship and contribute your own research to the existing knowledge in your field.
In a research masters you can contribute to the existing knowledge in your field by defining and managing a research project alongside some of New Zealand’s leading scholars.
In a taught masters you can deepen your knowledge in small classes with these leading scholars and complete a smaller research project such as a dissertation.
Asian Studies
Asian Studies gives you a broad understanding of the complexities and opportunities of Asia. Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary programme that draws on the wide range of expertise on Asia both in the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics and across the Faculty of Arts as a whole.
The University of Auckland offers the widest range of Asian Studies course options in New Zealand. You can choose to study film, literature, politics, history, popular culture, philosophy, geography, economics and anthropology.
Asian Studies graduates have gone on to careers in international organisations, NGOs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other areas of government.
Many students choose to augment their Chinese, Japanese or Korean major with a major or minor in Asian Studies; alternatively other students like to add Asian expertise to their major in other areas offered within the Bachelor of Arts.
Postgraduate work in Asian Studies requires an ability to conduct research in one or more Asian languages. You are encouraged to take advantage of the scholarships and exchange programmes offered by the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics and improve your language skills by studying abroad either before or during your postgraduate study.
