    Summary

    Engage in advanced scholarship and contribute your own research to the existing knowledge in your field.

    In a research masters you can contribute to the existing knowledge in your field by defining and managing a research project alongside some of New Zealand’s leading scholars.

    In a taught masters you can deepen your knowledge in small classes with these leading scholars and complete a smaller research project such as a dissertation.

    Criminology

    Criminology seeks to understand issues relating to crime, deviance, justice, law, culture and power. Criminology is concerned not just with crime, but with the broader issues of social control and deviance and how these affect punishment and criminal justice.

    Postgraduate study in Criminology allows you to advance your knowledge of criminological literature, theories and methods while you develop your own research interests.

    Postgraduate study opportunities in Criminology

    Criminology considers various perspectives and responses in criminology and criminal justice both within New Zealand and internationally. We offer courses and research possibilities in criminological theory, criminal justice practice and crime policy.

    Criminology staff research and publish in the following areas:

    • theories of crime causation (eitology) and control
    • social responses to crime
    • punishment, prisons and corrections
    • indigenous and restorative justice
    • crime and social stratification (including race, social class and gender);
    • critical legal theory
    • crime and intelligence
    • drugs, violence, deviance and more.
