Summary

The Master of Arts in Screen Production is a postgraduate programme that allows you to complete a large-scale film production.

The MA in Screen Production includes a large-scale production project. You can choose to focus on screenwriting, producing or directing (drama or documentary). The project will usually be a feature film (screenwriting), a short film (drama directing) or a half-hour documentary. You will work closely with a supervisor to realise your vision.

The programme is supplemented by guest speakers from the film industry, who will extend your knowledge of skills such as producing, research and art direction, and discuss the realities of progressing within the screen industry with you.

Students are required to crew on each other’s productions, further developing knowledge of the production process, as well as practical and teamwork skills. We support and encourage you to undertake internships with film production companies in your area of interest.

Required course of study

120-point (one-year) MA

The 120-point MA requires one year of full-time study, with admission from a BA(Hons) or PGDipArts. It is available as either a research or taught masters.

240-point (two-year) MA

The 240-point MA requires two consecutive years of full-time study, with admission from a BA or approved equivalent qualification. It is available as either a research or taught masters.

Entry criteria

Admission for 120-point (1 year) programme: applicants must have completed a BA(Hons) or PGDipArts in Screen Production with an average grade of B or higher, and submission of a project proposal approved by the Head of School or nominee as suitable for this MA. Admission for 240-point (2 years) programme: applicants must have completed a BA with a major in Film, Television and Media Studies or Media, Film or Television or a related subject, or approval of the Head of School or nominee. They must have an average grade of B or higher in at least 45 points above Stage II in the major. Enrolment in the second-year research component requires acceptance of the Head of School or nominee of a project proposal as suitable for this MA.
