Engage in advanced scholarship and contribute your own research to the existing knowledge in your field.

In a research masters you can contribute to the existing knowledge in your field by defining and managing a research project alongside some of New Zealand’s leading scholars.

In a taught masters you can deepen your knowledge in small classes with these leading scholars and complete a smaller research project such as a dissertation.

Postgraduate study opportunities in Translation Studies

Translation is available for the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation Studies and the Master of Professional Studies. A Master of Arts in Translation Studies is also available, as well as a PhD.

You may be able to include Translation Studies courses as part of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or Master of Arts in another subject.

Requirements:

120-point (one-year) MA

The 120-point MA requires one year of full-time study. The MA in Translation Studies is a taught masters.

240-point (two-year) MA

The 240-point MA requires two consecutive years of full-time study. The MA in Translation Studies is a taught masters.

Postgraduate careers

Studying translation or interpreting can open doors to a variety of career opportunities, including work in international organisations, in international business and trade, online and offline publishing, or software and website localisation.

In New Zealand, as in many other countries, most translators work as freelancers, advertising themselves over the internet and within their local communities, and do work sent to them by translation agencies or directly by end clients. In addition, some work fixed hours for a company as an in-house translator or for a translation agency.

Translators can specialise in various subject areas such as:

• Software localisation
• Technical translation
• Literary translation
• Website translation

Translation associated with business and trade is currently in high demand in the global market, especially within the localisation sector.

Interpreters may work with:

• Government agencies
• Refugee and migrant organisations
• Judicial and health systems

Most interpreting work here belongs to the area of community interpreting, i.e. it satisfies the needs of ethnic communities (for example in hospitals or courts).

Entry criteria

Admission for 120-point (1 year) programme: applicants must have completed a PG Diploma Translation Studies with an average grade of B+ or higher, or equivalent in a qualification in a related area, as approved by the Programme Co-ordinator. Admission for 240-point (2 years) programme: applicants must have completed a Bachelor of Arts, or an equivalent qualification as approved by the Programme Co-ordinator.

English language requirements:
IELTS 7.0; TOEFL (iBT) 100; TOEFL (paper-based) 600; CAE or CPE 185; PTE 65; MELAB 90.
