The Master of Science (MSc) programme enables you to pursue advanced study in your area of interest with the opportunity to work on independent research.

Programme overview

Studying for an MSc is an opportunity for committed scientists to focus on a relevant area of interest or practise and pursue an advanced qualification. While taught masters will provide you with specialist training in your chosen field, a research masters will develop advanced research skills, working alongside Faculty of Science researchers - many of whom are major contributors in their field.

Optometry

Optometry is the clinical application of visual science. It is the study of the basic physical and life sciences as they relate to the visual system, and the study of visual mechanisms, including colour and form perception, focussing properties and eye coordination. The role of the optometrist is to examine the eyes and the visual system, diagnose visual problems, advise of the prevention of eye problems, and prescribe and provide spectacles and contact lenses.

Career opportunities

When you have completed your undergraduate BOptom programme you may apply for registration as an optometrist with the NZ Opticians Board or State Board of Australia. There are opportunities in private practice, in hospitals, research, teaching and industry.

New Zealand postgraduate qualifications (including Masters or PhD qualifications) in Optometry or in Vision Science are not accepted for registration as an Optometrist in New Zealand.

Prerequisites : BOptom and a current registration as an optometrist and an annual practising certificate
