Summary
The Master of Speech Language Therapy Practice programme provides you with a clinical qualification in speech and language therapy. The course is comprised of both academic studies and time spent working in health, education and special school settings.
Programme overview
Are you a graduate from a related field such as psychology, linguistics, health sciences or education? The MSLTPrac is a New Zealand Speech-language Therapy Association accredited qualification. It is designed to provide you with the necessary specialist skills and experience to practise as a Speech Language Therapist in New Zealand and overseas.
You will study a range of subject areas including anatomy, physiology, linguistics and acoustics, and learn to apply theory to clinical practice. Students learn to use a range of approaches and technologies to assess, diagnose and treat communication and swallowing disorders.
Programme structure
The MSLTPrac degree is a 240-point taught masters that includes a research dissertation. It is a competitive entry programme that involves two years of full-time study following a fixed programme of courses. Students move together as a cohort from year 1 to year 2.

Where could this programme take you?
Speech-language therapists are needed in health and education positions throughout New Zealand. As a result of an ageing population, therapists are in steady demand to help patients with impaired language function due to neurological conditions such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease. Therapists also work with adults and children who have swallowing and communication difficulties.

Entry criteria
You must have completed an undergraduate degree at a recognised university (or similar institution) with a GPE of 4.0. A minimum of 60% of the most advanced-level courses in your degree must have been in an approved subject such as education, psychology, linguistics or health sciences.
English language requirements:
IELTS 6.5; TOEFL (iBT) 90; TOEFL (paper-based) 575; CAE or CPE 176; PTE 58; MELAB 85.
