    Summary

Prepare for a career as a translator with a programme that combines theory with hands-on translation practice in digital environments.

    Programme overview

With the constant growth in international communication in the digital age, the demand for translation is increasing.

This postgraduate diploma is the first level in professional translator training. You will gain a sound appreciation of translation as a professional activity and learn about the local and global translation market.

You will engage in hands-on translation practice, learn to use and understand the electronic tools essential to the modern translator, and explore translation theory and cutting-edge research.

    Programme structure

This 120-point programme combines theoretical issues with translation practice over one year full-time or up to four years part-time. It consists of two core courses and additional elective courses in translation and languages.

We are making changes to the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation Studies, so you should contact the Postgraduate Adviser to discuss your enrolment.

If English is not your first language, you have an opportunity to study English discourse and grammar, as well as the editing of English texts.

    120 points

Two core courses in translation theory and practice (30 points)

Elective courses in translation and languages (90 points)

One year full-time or up to four years part-time

You can become a full member of the New Zealand Society of Translators and Interpreters (NZSTI) if you receive a B grade average or higher and at least a B+ in your translation practice course.

Where could this programme take you?

This programme will provide you with a good foundation for entering the translation profession. Many translators work as freelancers, others work as in-house translators or for translation agencies. Translators usually specialise in areas such as software and website localisation, or technical, audiovisual or literary translation.
