Summary

The degree of Master of Dance Studies (MDanceSt) is a one-year degree which encompasses both dance coursework and research. The degree can be taken full-time or part-time and will be preceded by the student's undergraduate degree and or considerable dance experience.

Students undertaking a Master of Dance Studies degree should have extensive career experience in a specific dance profession, such as teaching or choreography that will be directly related to their study.

Approved papers worth at least 80 points at 500-level or above, including:

PHSE 591 Research Methods (or an equivalent or approved research methods alternative)

500-level papers worth at least 60 points from:

PHSE 554 Dance Education Philosophy

PHSE 555 Dance and the Community

PHSE 556 Dance Education

PHSE 559 Dance Ethnography

Thesis: PHSE 5A

Entry criteria

Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).
Every applicant must normally either

• have completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree requiring at least four years of full-time study, or
• have completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree requiring three years of full-time study, have had at least three years' experience relevant to the programme, and provide evidence of ability to undertake advanced academic study.

In exceptional circumstances, an applicant who is not a graduate may be considered on the basis of alternative qualifications or satisfactory training and experience in dance. Such preparation must be equivalent to a degree, and the applicant must provide evidence of ability to undertake advanced level academic study.

English Language Requirements: IELTS - Score of 6.5 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0); Internet-based TOEFL Score of 95 with a minimum writing score of 22.; Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 587 (TWE 4.5); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) – Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); APIEL Advanced Placement International English Language Examination - Grade 4 or higher; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - Overall score of 64 with no communicative skills score below 57; University of Otago Foundation Studies Ltd: Completion of 'English for Postgraduate Academic Purposes' with a grade of C or higher.
