Summary

The Master of Teaching (MTchg) degree has been specifically designed for in-service teachers. This programme will provide teachers with opportunities to examine their personal theories of teaching and learning, and evaluate their teaching practices.

Structure of the Programme

The programme of study shall consist of:

EDUC 440 Critical Analysis of Teaching (20 points) or EDUC 423 Technology-enhanced Learning (20 points);

EDUC 441 Researching Personal Teaching Practice (20 points);

EDUC 590 Professional Practice Portfolio (60 points); and

other 400-level Education papers worth a total of 80 points.

The Professional Practice Portfolio (EDUC 590) should be submitted no earlier than six months and no later than twelve months following enrolment.

With prior approval, postgraduate papers worth up to the equivalent of 40 points may be credited from another department or from another university or tertiary institution.

A candidate who has been awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching or Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching at a standard acceptable to the Dean of the College of Education may be exempted from those papers in the programme for the degree which have been previously passed for the certificate or diploma.

Entry criteria

Every applicant must

• have a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualification;
• have at least three years of successful teaching experience;
• be able to complete the Professional Practice Portfolio (EDUC 590) while working in a relevant field of education;
• present evidence of ability for advanced level academic study.

English Language Requirements: IELTS - Score of 6.5 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0); Internet-based TOEFL Score of 95 with a minimum writing score of 22.; Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 587 (TWE 4.5); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) – Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); APIEL Advanced Placement International English Language Examination - Grade 4 or higher; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - Overall score of 64 with no communicative skills score below 57; University of Otago Foundation Studies Ltd: Completion of 'English for Postgraduate Academic Purposes' with a grade of C or higher.
