Summary

The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching (PGCertTchg) is a professional qualification designed for practicing teachers. It requires one semester of full-time, or the equivalent in part-time, study to complete. It is currently taught via the Internet, and the primary aim is to prepare teachers for classroom instruction in an important area of the new core curriculum. The normal admission requirements are a completed Bachelor's degree and registration to teach in a New Zealand primary or secondary school.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching equips a practicing teacher with the skills and knowledge required to provide instruction in a critically important new area of the current school curriculum.

Structure of the Programme

The programme shall consist of:

EDUC 423 Technology-enhanced Learning.
Further Information and Communication Technology papers offered by the College of Education, to the value of 40 points.

The papers shall constitute a coherent and integrated programme of study with a focus on information and communication technology.

Entry criteria

Every applicant shall

have a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University, or be able to demonstrate extensive practical, professional or scholarly experience to the satisfaction of the Dean of the College of Education;
be registered to teach in New Zealand primary and/or secondary schools, or have an equivalent teaching qualification acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities);
have experience of or be currently working in a relevant field of education;
present evidence of ability for advanced level academic study.

English Language Requirements: IELTS - Score of 6.5 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0); Internet-based TOEFL Score of 95 with a minimum writing score of 22.; Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 587 (TWE 4.5); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) – Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); APIEL Advanced Placement International English Language Examination - Grade 4 or higher; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - Overall score of 64 with no communicative skills score below 57; University of Otago Foundation Studies Ltd: Completion of 'English for Postgraduate Academic Purposes' with a grade of C or higher.
