Summary

The Postgraduate Diploma in Outdoor Education (PGDipOE) is a one-year programme of study integrating coursework with a research project. Usually students undertake courses that relate directly to their research project, and are encouraged to enroll in the outdoor education courses offered at both the graduate and the undergraduate level. Coursework provides a sound foundation for Master's and Doctoral degree research in later years. Normally the PGDipOE is a required prerequisite for entry to the Master's degree, although an Honours degree in Physical Education or exceptional grades at undergraduate level may lead directly into the Master's programme.

Structure of the Programme

The programme of study shall normally contain

PHSE 581 Research Project

PHSE 591 Research Design and Analysis, or an approved 500-level research methods course, and

60 approved points at 500-level, at least 40 points of which must be from PHSE 516, PHSE 527, PHSE 528, PHSE 552, PHSE 557, PHSE 558, PHSE 580

Entry criteria

Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).
Every applicant must either

have been admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Physical Education, or
have alternative qualifications and experience in Outdoor Education acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).

English Language Requirements: IELTS - Score of 6.5 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0); Internet-based TOEFL Score of 95 with a minimum writing score of 22.; Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 587 (TWE 4.5); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) – Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); APIEL Advanced Placement International English Language Examination - Grade 4 or higher; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - Overall score of 64 with no communicative skills score below 57; University of Otago Foundation Studies Ltd: Completion of 'English for Postgraduate Academic Purposes' with a grade of C or higher.
