Summary

If you're interested in a career in the world of commerce and want expertise in business and the business of government then the Bachelor of Commerce is the degree for you.

The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) is a three-year undergraduate degree designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need for a successful career in the exciting world of commerce.

You'll get a strong foundation in private business and public administration and gain skills in communication, teamwork and leadership. In the BCom, you'll develop your critical and creative thinking, as well as an understanding of how different cultures do business.

Finance

Study how people and companies spend money and manage risk, and find out how markets work and behave. Learn how to apply your knowledge whether trading in shares, currencies, bonds, electricity or commodities. You'll focus on the four main areas of Finance - financial securities, financial institutions, financial decision-making by firms and investment portfolio choices.

Course Structure

For this degree you'll need to:

Complete at least 360 points, of which:

• At least 210 points must be from courses listed for the BCom
• At least 180 points must be at 200 and 300 level
• Of the 180 points at least 75 points must be at 300 level
• Of the 75 points at least 45 points must be from courses listed for the BCom

Complete seven core courses at 100 level (usually in first year):

• Either Accounting (ACCY 111) or Accounting for Decision Making (ACCY 130)
• Microeconomic Principles (ECON 130)
• Government, Law and Business (FCOM 111)
• Foundations of Information Systems (INFO 101)
• Principles of Marketing (MARK 101)
• Introduction to Management (MGMT 101)
• Statistics for Business (QUAN 102)

In addition to the degree requirements, for this major you'll need to complete:

Four courses at 100 level:

• Microeconomic Principles (ECON 130)
• Macroeconomic Principles (ECON 141)

Either Statistics for Business (QUAN 102) or one course from:

• Probability and Decision Modelling (MATH 177)
• Statistics for the Natural and Social Sciences (STAT 193)
• Either Mathematics for Economics and Finance (QUAN 111) or

Algebra (MATH 151) and one course from:

• Calculus 1A (MATH 141)
• Calculus 1B (MATH 142)

Three courses at 200 level:

• Introduction to Corporate Finance (FINA 201)
• Introduction to Investments (FINA 202)

One course from:

• Financial Accounting (ACCY 231)
• Intermediate Microeconomics (ECON 201)
• Open-economy Macroeconomics (ECON 202)
• Applied Finance (FINA 203)
• Mathematical Statistics (MATH 277)
• Introduction to Econometrics (QUAN 201)
• Quantitative Methods for Economics and Finance (QUAN 203)

Three courses at 300 level from:

• Financial Statement Analysis (ACCY 306)
• FINA 300-399

Entry criteria

Achieve the International Baccalaureate Diploma, or three GCE Advanced Level passes at C grade, or equivalent.

English Language requirements:

• IELTS overall band of 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5; or
• TOEFL 80 on the internet-based test; or
• A minimum of three ratings of 4 and one rating of 3 in the Victoria University English Proficiency Programme test; or
• Pearson Test of English: A score of 58 (with a ‘Communicative’ score of not less than 50).
