    Summary

    If you're interested in a career in the world of commerce and want expertise in business and the business of government then the Bachelor of Commerce is the degree for you.

    The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) is a three-year undergraduate degree designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need for a successful career in the exciting world of commerce.

    You'll get a strong foundation in private business and public administration and gain skills in communication, teamwork and leadership. In the BCom, you'll develop your critical and creative thinking, as well as an understanding of how different cultures do business.

    Information Systems

    Get a practical introduction to the different types of IT available, and how and why they are used in business. Through the Business Analysis specialisation you'll learn how to find the right solution for a business problem. When specialising in InfoTech Solutions you'll find out how to deliver a technology solution to a business.

    If you are majoring in Information Systems the specialisations are optional. This means you can major in Information Systems with or without a specialisation.

    Course Structure

    For this degree you'll need to:

    Complete at least 360 points, of which:

    • At least 210 points must be from courses listed for the BCom
    • At least 180 points must be at 200 and 300 level
    • Of the 180 points at least 75 points must be at 300 level
    • Of the 75 points at least 45 points must be from courses listed for the BCom

    Complete seven core courses at 100 level (usually in first year):

    • Either Accounting (ACCY 111) or Accounting for Decision Making (ACCY 130)
    • Microeconomic Principles (ECON 130)
    • Government, Law and Business (FCOM 111)
    • Foundations of Information Systems (INFO 101)
    • Principles of Marketing (MARK 101)
    • Introduction to Management (MGMT 101)
    • Statistics for Business (QUAN 102)

    In addition to the degree requirements, for this major you'll need to complete:

    Three courses at 100 level:

    • Foundations of Information Systems (INFO 101)
    • Systems Analysis (INFO 141)
    • Databases (INFO 151)
    • Three courses from INFO 200-299

    Three courses at 300 level:

    Either Project in Information Systems (INFO 320) or Case Studies in Information Systems (INFO 395)

    Two further courses from INFO 300-399

    Students completing a major in Information Systems may obtain a specialisation in Business Analysis by including the following six courses in meeting the 200 and 300-level major requirements listed above:

    • Management of IT Projects (INFO 231)
    • Business Process Design (INFO 234)
    • Business Analytics (INFO 264)
    • Case Studies in Information Systems (INFO 395)

    Two further courses from:

    • Digital Business Innovation (INFO 334)
    • Information Systems Strategy (INFO 354)
    • Enterprise Architecture (INFO 376)

    Students completing a major in Information Systems may obtain a specialisation in IT Solutions by including the following six courses in meeting the 200 and 300-level major requirements listed above:

    • Application Development (INFO 226)
    • Management of IT Projects (INFO 231)
    • User Experience Design (INFO 246)
    • Project in Information Systems (INFO 320)

    Two further courses from:

    • Information Systems Strategy (INFO 354)
    • Enterprise Architecture (INFO 376)
    • System Verification (INFO 377)
    • Information Technology Architecture (INFO 386)

    Entry criteria

    Achieve the International Baccalaureate Diploma, or three GCE Advanced Level passes at C grade, or equivalent.

    English Language requirements:

    • IELTS overall band of 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5; or
    • TOEFL 80 on the internet-based test; or
    • A minimum of three ratings of 4 and one rating of 3 in the Victoria University English Proficiency Programme test; or
    • Pearson Test of English: A score of 58 (with a ‘Communicative’ score of not less than 50).
