Summary

If you're interested in a career in the world of commerce and want expertise in business and the business of government then the Bachelor of Commerce is the degree for you.

The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) is a three-year undergraduate degree designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need for a successful career in the exciting world of commerce.

You'll get a strong foundation in private business and public administration and gain skills in communication, teamwork and leadership. In the BCom, you'll develop your critical and creative thinking, as well as an understanding of how different cultures do business.

Public Policy

Examine the methods used to make fair and good policy decisions and how they are put in place. Look at the role of government and how they can be made more effective. Learn how governments make policy, how the public sector is run and the political dimensions of public sector decision-making.

Course Structure

For this degree you'll need to:

Complete at least 360 points, of which:

• At least 210 points must be from courses listed for the BCom
• At least 180 points must be at 200 and 300 level
• Of the 180 points at least 75 points must be at 300 level
• Of the 75 points at least 45 points must be from courses listed for the BCom

Complete seven core courses at 100 level (usually in first year):

• Either Accounting (ACCY 111) or Accounting for Decision Making (ACCY 130)
• Microeconomic Principles (ECON 130)
• Government, Law and Business (FCOM 111)
• Foundations of Information Systems (INFO 101)
• Principles of Marketing (MARK 101)
• Introduction to Management (MGMT 101)
• Statistics for Business (QUAN 102)

In addition to the degree requirements, for this major you'll need to complete:

One course at 100 level from:

• Government, Law and Business (FCOM 111)
• Social and Public Policy: Values and Change (PUBL 113)
• Introduction to New Zealand Government and Politics (POLS 111)

Three courses at 200 level:

• Introduction to Public Policy (PUBL 201)
• Policy Analysis Methods and Practice (PUBL 210)
• One further courses from PUBL 200-299

Two courses at 300 level:

• Innovations in Public Policy (PUBL 310)
• One further course PUBL 300-399
• One further course from PUBL 200-399

Entry criteria

Achieve the International Baccalaureate Diploma, or three GCE Advanced Level passes at C grade, or equivalent.

English Language requirements:

• IELTS overall band of 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5; or
• TOEFL 80 on the internet-based test; or
• A minimum of three ratings of 4 and one rating of 3 in the Victoria University English Proficiency Programme test; or
• Pearson Test of English: A score of 58 (with a ‘Communicative’ score of not less than 50).
