Summary

Find out about the physical processes that continuously shape our Earth - like the movement of oceans and glaciers, earthquakes, the climate and animals. Discover the relationships between these different Earth System processes, and the ways that these can affect economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Study the environment, water, glaciers and climate change. You'll also learn about techniques for geographical analysis (GIS), natural hazards, and coastal and land management.

Course Structure

For this degree you'll need to:

Complete at least 360 points, of which:

• At least 270 points must be from courses listed for the BSc
• At least 210 points must be from 200 and 300-level courses, including:
• At least 150 points must be from courses listed for the BSc
• At least 75 points must be from 300-level courses listed for the BSc

Courses listed for other degrees may be counted as being BSc courses, including:

• A maximum of 30 points if taken to satisfy a BSc major
• A maximum of 30 points if taken to satisfy a second major from another first degree at this university
• A maximum of 60 points across both these categories
• Complete one course in MATH, PHYS, QUAN, STAT (or an approved equivalent) at any level
• Complete one approved course that demonstrates competency in oral and written communications

In addition to the degree requirements, for this major you'll need to complete:

Four courses at 100 level:

• Either Fundamentals of Geology (ESCI 112) or Introduction to Human Geography and Development Studies (GEOG 112)
• The Earth System: An introduction to Physical Geography and Earth Sciences (GEOG 111) / The Earth System: An Introduction to Physical Geography and Earth Sciences (ESCI 111)
• Environment and Resources: the Foundations (GEOG 114) / Environment and Resources: the Foundations (ENVI 114)
• One course in MATH, PHYS, QUAN or STAT

Three courses at 200 level:

• Ecology and Environment (GEOG 222)

Two courses from:

• Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Science (GEOG 215)
• Hydrology and Climate (GEOG 220)
• Geomorphology (GEOG 224)

Four courses at 300 level:

• Research Design (GEOG 324)
• Field Methods (GEOG 325)

Two courses from:

• Quaternary Environmental Change (GEOG 318)
• Applied Geomorphology (GEOG 319)
• Ice and Climate (GEOG 321)

Entry criteria

To be accepted into this degree you need:

• Achievement of the International Baccalaureate Diploma
• Successful completion of the All-India Senior School Certificate (AISSC) with an average of 75 per cent or higher overall
• Successful completion of the India School Certificate (ISC) with an average of 75 per cent or higher overall

Other English Language requirements:

• IELTS: minimum overall score of 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5
• TOEFL: minimum overall score of 80 (internet-based test)
• Pearson Test of English: minimum score of 58 (with a 'Communicative score' of not less than 50)
• EPP: minimum final scores of 4,4,4,3
• A grade of 65% or higher in English in the AISSC or ISC.
