Summary

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) consists of an individual course of supervised research that involves a substantial commitment from the candidate, supervisor(s), and the University that extends over some years. At a minimum, it requires two years of full-time registration.

PhD theses are evaluated by international standards, and the award of the degree is a mark of academic distinction. Prospective students should acquaint themselves with the relevant School's research activity and staff research expertise.

Entry criteria

To enrol for the PhD you must meet the prescribed academic standard and be accepted by a School.

Before admission, you must have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree with First or upper Second Class Honours, or a Master's degree at an equivalent standard at a New Zealand university.
Alternatively, you may enrol initially in a Master's degree and then be allowed to transfer to the PhD.
In exceptional circumstances, you may be permitted to enrol without meeting these criteria if you have extensive relevant experience.

Other English Language requirements:

TOEFL score of 575 with (preferably) a TWE of 5; or 237 on the computer-based test; or a minimum of two ratings of 5 and two ratings of 4 in the Victoria University English Proficiency Programme test or CAE grade B; Pearson Test of English a score of 65 (with a communicative score of not less than 58).
