Summary

A Graduate Diploma in Teaching from the University of Waikato is a qualification that sets you up to become a skilled and reflective teacher. We produce qualified teachers who are in high demand both in New Zealand and around the world.

Prepare yourself for a career in secondary schools with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (GradDipT), working with young people aged 13-18 years old. The University of Waikato can prepare you for most curriculum subjects. There are currently shortages in English, maths, science, technology and te reo 毛利.

This programme consists of eight compulsory papers (120 points, with 80 points at 300 level), including three curriculum subject papers, two practicum and three Professional Education papers. Learn how to teach your curriculum areas and develop skills in teaching and learning.

To teach a NZ curriculum subject at senior level (year 11-13), 300 level university papers are required. To teach junior levels (year 7-10), 100 and 200 level university papers are required. Graduates who apply for the programme submit their degree transcript(s), and the programme leader/coordinator discusses and advises the appropriate programme once applicants reach the interview stage.

Entry criteria

Bachelors degree or Graduate Diploma (Level 7) with a minimum of 72 points in a NZ Curriculum subject.

Selection of applicants is based on academic background, communication skills, personal qualities, background experiences and referee support. As well as being selected as a suitable person to be a teacher you will need to meet one of the admission requirements for university.

English language requirements:

IELTS - 6.5 overall (no less than 6.0 in writing); iBT (internet based TOFEL) - 90 with a score of 22 in writing; Pearson PTE Academic- 65 with English language requirements no less than 58 for each communicative skill; From Waikato Pathways College - Successful completion of Level 8 with a B grade average in the Certificate of Attainment in Academic (CAAE) programme
