    Summary

    This is a one-year programme of advanced study in Film, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography or Sculpture. The BFA(Hons) consists of a submission of works and a research paper in the same subject.

    The School of Fine Arts provides opportunities to gain valuable exhibition experience through an ongoing professional relationship with the Christchurch Art Gallery. There is also an artist-in-residence programme and the School enjoys a busy schedule of visiting international artists who share their expertise with postgraduate students.

    On-campus facilities include ample studio space, well-equipped workshops, digital labs, darkrooms and extensive film and video facilities. In addition there is an onsite gallery, and one of the country's top fine arts collections.

    Qualification structure and duration

    The Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours takes one year full-time to complete.

    Subjects and courses

    UC offers five subjects areas for studio specialisation in the Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours:

    • Film
    • Graphic Design
    • Painting
    • Photography
    • Sculpture

    Each honours student will produce a submission of works arising out of approved and supervised studio coursework, as well as a research paper.

    Further study

    UC also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Art Curatorship, and Master of Fine Arts.

    Numerous exhibitions are organised by the School of Fine Arts throughout the year, allowing students to showcase their work to multiple audiences.

    Recent UC graduates have gained employment as professional artists, art gallery directors, photojournalists, commercial photographers, film directors, designers, consultants, art conservators, illustrators, fashion designers, curators, art critics, art historians, graphic designers, lecturers and art teachers.

    Candidates require a Bachelor of Fine Arts in relevant subjects with good grades. Candidates must also submit a research proposal and work scheme that is acceptable to the Postgraduate Admissions Committee.

    Other English language requirements: TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 550 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5; CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum C+ grade; CAE or CPE minimum score of 169 with at least 162 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE with an overall score of 57 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50.
