Summary

CCEL's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) - Pathway to UC course is for students who want to improve their academic English skills for tertiary study in an English speaking country and/or gain direct entry (without IELTS) into CCEL's partner institution, the University of Canterbury (UC). What you will learn: academic reading and writing skills, academic vocabulary, skills for understanding lectures, skills for giving presentations, skills for participating in academic discussions. After completing the course you will be able to: understand the learning process and know in what environment you are most likely to succeed academically; know where to find information relevant to your academic needs and have practiced note taking in various forms. You should be aware of written academic genres, their purpose and their form and have had structured opportunities to produce writing in the main genres; use a variety of sub-skills in order to read more effectively and have put your learned skills to practice on a variety of texts relating to contemporary and relevant issues; have the necessary skills to take part in group discussions and make presentations as part of a group and individually. Once you have successfully completed EAP and achieved the necessary grades and if you also meet the academic entrance requirements, you can apply to study at UC.
