Summary

The Master of Science usually consists of two parts: coursework and a thesis allowing for students to investigate areas of interest to them and conduct independent and original research.

MSc (ENGE) is a 12-month, thesis-only degree, entry for which requires a B+ grade average in PMEG courses or equivalent, an appropriate lecturer or research associate must agree to be supervisor, and a research proposal must have been written in conjunction with the supervisor and approved within the Dept. All applicants for MSc are initially admitted to PMEG or have the equivalent from elsewhere. At the end of the coursework for the PMEG degree, you may apply for entry to MSc (12 month thesis) without needing to complete the PMEG research project. MSc students must conduct their research, write a thesis, and also present their research as a seminar in the Department.

Students will normally have a background in geology or geotechnical engineering and most will complete one year of postgraduate coursework before undertaking research at the Masters or PhD thesis level, although direct entry to thesis level is also common.

Entry criteria

Candidates must have completed one of the following:

• Bachelor of Science
• Bachelor of Science with Honours*
• Bachelor of Speech and Language Pathology with Honours
• Postgraduate Diploma in Science*
• Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Geology
• or any bachelor's degree and a qualifying programme.

* Students who have qualified for a Bachelor of Science with Honours or Postgraduate Diploma in Science in a subject may be admitted to a MSc Part II (by thesis-only) in that subject.

Other English language requirements: TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5; CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade; CAE or CPE score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE with an overall score of 64 and no PTE communicative skills score below 58.
