Programme Overview

Learn fundamental hairdressing and customer service skills to enable you to begin a hairdressing apprenticeship or move on to year two of study with WelTec. This programme includes plenty of practical experience to support the essential theory delivered. Scheduled salon days and other promotional events held throughout the programme also provide students with valuable practical experience working on actual customers.

You and the salon: ​workplace requirements, professional behaviour, product display, appointments, services and workflow, health, hygiene and self-styling, safe and professional practice, sustainable concepts, hierarchy and industry terminology.

Hair care basics: communication, consultation, trichology, hair services, common hair and scalp problems, tools and equipment, health and safety.

Hair movement: client care, consultation, product recommendation, hair services, shampoo, appointments systems and records, tools.

Enhancing appearance: ​setting, colour, highlights/lowlights, neutralizing, history of hairdressing

​Elementary styling: shampoo, product knowledge, introductory cutting, highlighting/low lighting, tools and equipment, health and safety

Hairstyling: hair services, client service and care, product knowledge, consultation.

Professional Practice: ​customer service, customer care, communication skills, appointment systems and records, workflow, health, hygiene, tools and equipment, hair services, self-styling, product knowledge.

Entry criteria

NCEA Level 1 or evidence of equivalent skills and knowledge

International students

Proven equivalence of entry requirements plus IELTS 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0)
