Roll up your sleeves and learn the sought-after skills needed to start your career in construction.

No two days are the same in this energetic and exciting learning environment. If you enjoy being physically active and aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, this could be the programme for you. You’ll learn all aspects of the construction trade and the knowledge you need to succeed in this industry.

At MIT, you’ll benefit from working in well-resourced rooms and small class sizes. Our teachers train you to industry standards and are well-connected, to support you as you enter the workforce.

This programme requires you to be working in the construction industry. Study takes place in the evenings at MIT Otara while employers and tutors will verify the students’ competency through site visits. Students will be visited on site at least once a term but more if required.

Career opportunities

Graduates of this qualification will be qualified carpenters. They may go on to further roles such as site supervision, project management, contracts management, quantity surveying, business owner, building inspection and assessment, tutor or training advisor.

Programme structure

Core Skills 1: Students will learn to use carpentry hand tools and equipment safely

Core Skills 2: Students will develop the skills to safely use a range of hand tools, power tools and scaffolding

Legislation: Students will gain an understanding of the legislation governing safety, quality and compliance within the building industry

Basic Industry Skills: Students will develop skills of reading plans, measuring and calculating quantities, and principles of framing

Building Science 1: Students will learn the principles of thermal and acoustic insulation, adhesives and sealants, construction programming.

First Aid: Students will learn the management of first aid situations on a construction site setting and gain first aid certification

Building Science 2: Students will learn the principles of weather tightness, concrete, retaining walls

Foundations 1: Students will learn principles of site establishment and foundations

Concrete and Steel: Students will develop the skills to place reinforcing steel and concrete on building sites

Structures 1: Students will learn about, and carry out wall framing, roof framing and trusses

Envelopment 1: Students will learn, and carry out fitting and fixing of exterior claddings, joinery and hardware

Core Skills 3: Students will develop the skills to carry out preliminary work and set out buildings

Foundations 2: Students construct foundations

Structures 2: Students will develop the skills to construct building structure

Envelopment 2: Students will fix cladding and install joinery

Interiors: Students will install insulation, linings and fix trim

Further training or study

Graduates of this qualification may choose to continue their education with the following:

• New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Supervisor) (Level 4)
• New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Main Contract Supervision) (Level 5)
• New Zealand Diploma in Construction Management (Level 6) with strands in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying

Entry criteria

Applicants must be working within the construction industry

1. A minimum of 10 literacy credits at level 1 which meet the NCEA level 1 literacy requirements

and

1. A minimum of 10 numeracy credits at level 1 which meet the NCEA level 1 numeracy requirements

OR

Be a graduate of a pre-apprenticeship qualification in a building and construction field ie NZ Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) with strands in Carpentry; Scaffolding; Trowel Trades; Paint and Plaster or Roofing NZ2834 – Carpentry Strand

Or equivalent qualifications or experience. Where a student has not achieved this academic pathway their suitability will be determined by a career discussion and if appropriate, admission may be granted by the Dean.

English Language entry requirements

Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. This will be demonstrated by meeting the current NZQA requirements.

• IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower then 5
• TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)
• TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 20)
• Cambridge English Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill OET at Grade C in all sub-tests

• Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 42
