Are you ready to move into the role of a construction supervisor?

If you have a building trade-related qualification and want to move into a supervisory or main contract position, this programme is for you.

This Level 5 programme is aimed at qualified carpenters who are working on commercial or medium builds and want to move to a role overseeing the build as a site manager, project or contract manager.

This programme is also for those who are in these roles and wish to formalise their experience.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Main Contract Supervision) (Level 5) will be able to work in residential or commercial construction as:

• Main Contract Supervisors
• Business Ownership/Operators

With further training and/or experience, graduates may be able to work in residential or commercial construction as:

• Site Managers
• Construction Managers
• Project Managers
• Contract Managers

Programme structure

Concrete Construction methods and weatherproofing systems: Apply a broad range of technical theoretical and operational knowledge of current building and construction practices as they apply to the construction of medium buildings in a supervisory role

Supervision of sub-trades for a medium build: Supervise workers and subcontractors through effective communication, professionalism and planning to the completion of their portion of a medium building construction project to the required safety, technical, quality and productivity standards expected in a commercial environment

Non-structural exterior and ceiling wall systems: Supervise workers and subcontractors through effective communication, professionalism and planning to the completion of their portion of a medium building construction project to the required safety, technical, quality and productivity standards expected in a commercial environment

Building Construction methods and order lists: Apply a broad range of technical theoretical and operational knowledge of current building and construction practices as they apply to the construction of medium buildings in a supervisory role

Further training or study

This certificate could lead to further study at diploma or degree level in the field of Management, Quantity Surveying, Architectural Technology or any other building and construction related fields

Entry criteria

General

It is expected that applicants will have existing knowledge and skills in the trade that they will be supervising.

Applicants will either have the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Supervisor) Level 4 or equivalent.

OR

Relevant current industry experience to be supported by a validated portfolio of industry experience
Applicants will be working in a medium build or commercial environment.

English Language entry requirements

Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English.

• IELTS test - Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
• TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
• TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
• Cambridge English Examinations - FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 162. No less than
• 154 in each skill OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
• NZCEL a) Expiring b) Current - a) Level 4 (General) or (Workplace) b) Level 4 (General) or (Employment)
• Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PToE (Academic) score of 42
• City & Guilds IESOL - B2 Communicator with a score of 42
